The Calcasieu Parish school system is among the largest public school systems in Louisiana with more than 33,000 students in over 55 schools. An approximate 29:1 pupil/teacher ratio is maintained and attendance rates average 95% (well above the national average). The private/parochial school system in Calcasieu Parish consists of more than a dozen schools and two new charter schools are offering a new alternative public education to area students.

Higher Education

McNeese State University

McNeese State University was established by the Louisiana Legislature in 1939 and has been providing educational excellence with a personal touch for nearly 75 years.

McNeese achieved Commission on Colleges/Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation in 1954 and maintains its regional accreditation status as a Level IV institution authorized to award associate, bachelor, master, and specialist degrees. The University also provides opportunities for continuing education in support of its mission to value lifelong learning.

As a member of the University of Louisiana System and a selective admissions institution, McNeese offers programs through the department of general and basic studies and six academic colleges: Business, Education, Engineering and Engineering Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing, and Science. McNeese’s student body is comprised of students from throughout Louisiana, the United States, and approximately 50 countries.

SOWELA Technical Community College

Providing training in business and computer literacy, as well as aviation oriented programs including a certified A&P mechanics program, SOWELA gives state-of-the-art traditional and distance learning experiences, awards certificates, technical diplomas, and associate degrees that empower students in transfer, career and technical education to excel as globally competitive citizens.

SOWELA is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE), a national accrediting agency that specializes in the accreditation of job training and workforce development institutions.

COE is approved by the U.S. Secretary of Education to accredit these specialized schools.
